Official Bird Lists For South Australia

A Field List of the Birds of South Australia

This is the fifth edition of the Field List of the Birds of South Australia published by Birds SA in 2017 and was last updated in 2020.  It is the first to be an electronic copy only and gives more birders the opportunity to download a free copy online rather than having to purchase the booklet. The list of birds is arranged in the current taxonomic order (to Family level) and with the latest information on their distribution.

"It is the most up-to-date and taxonomically accurate list of birds found in South Australia." (Birds SA)

The list has been extensively reworked, building on the previous editions and information from many sources, including published and unpublished observations of Birds SA members. The data have been vetted carefully by experts from the Birds SA Records Committee.

Annotated List of the Birds of South Australia

The list is a comprehensive and detailed inventory of bird species found in South Australia that was published as a scientific paper in 2020. It builds on the above booklet by adding more scientific details about the taxonomy and distribution of birds, including their subspecies.

It includes all species of birds reliably recorded from free-living populations within South Australia during the period of European settlement. There are 317 non-passerines (of which seven are introduced) and 183 passerines (six introduced), totalling 500 species for the state.
