The Long Weekend Camp out will be at Danggali Conservation Park, which is approx. 350km northeast of Adelaide. The official camp out will be from Saturday 4 to Monday 6 October, but you may arrive earlier and depart later if you wish. We will use the Canopus Homesteads as our base campsite whilst we undertake bird surveys in the park and some surrounding areas. Please bring your own water and provisions. There is no food or fuel available in the park. The nearest fuel is in Renmark about 90 km away.

To get there from Adelaide travel along the Sturt Highway to Renmark, proceed through the centre of town to the T-junction, turn left onto Ral Ral Road travelling towards Cooltong for approx. 10 km to a sign on the right marked Old Wentworth Road. Follow this road until you see a sign pointing to Danggali CP which will take you to the Canopus Homestead camping area (see location map here). The last stretch of road is not sealed, so please use caution.

The birding here should be unique with a mixture of arid land and mallee birds. Possible sightings include Major Mitchell, Red-lored Whistler, Scarlet-chested Parrot, Redthroat and Wedgebill to stir your enthusiasm!

The Homestead has a kitchen for us all to use and a large bathroom with a shower and 2 handbasins. There are two outdoor toilets, 1 flushing and 1 long-drop. Camping fees for tents, camper vans and vans will be $20per day. Limited accommodation for up to 12 people is available in the shearer’s quarters. The main dormitory has 5 single beds, two rooms have a queen bed in each and two rooms have two single beds each. To cover securing this dormitory accommodation, you will need to pay $100 per person for a 3-night minimum stay (approx. $33 per night). Facilities include a gas stove and fridges. All crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots & pans are supplied. You will need to bring your own sheets, pillows, blankets and towels. Contact Lynton Huxley on 0498466092 to secure a room ASAP or for additional information.

Please be aware that:

  1. The camp out is subject to cancellation if the park is closed due to a weather or fire event;
  2. Roads to and in the park are unsealed and heavy rain may require the closure of tracks. A handheld UHF radio or vehicle-mounted unit is recommended. Mobile phone reception may be patchy;
  3. You will need to be self-sufficient with all food, drinking water, vehicle fuel, gas and camping equipment and be responsible for taking your own “rubbish” out.
  4. Planned camp activities include a nightly ‘Happy Hour’–you may consider sharing your favourite nibbles.
