Field Trips

We typically run three field trips each month, which are half-day excursions in the Adelaide region. There will usually be one weekday on a Thursday and one or two weekend trips each month, which are mostly run on a Saturday. Our field trips usually start at 08:30 AM and finish around 12:30 PM, followed by a BYO lunch and chair. The trip leader will lead a call of the bird species sighted during the morning's birding.

In addition to these field trips in the Adelaide region, we have two regional subgroups - the Fleurieu Birds and the Port Augusta Birders (The Babblers), who also frequently run their own monthly field trips, which you are welcome to join. These regional field trips are publicised on this website and in the Member Jungle app.

Campouts

Campouts are run mostly twice a year during the Easter holidays and the October long weekend.  They could be anywhere in SA and are posted well in advanced as they are popular. Depending on the locality, numbers may be restricted and members may have to register to participate.  Details of the campouts are provided in the Events page

Key definitions of terms for field trips and campouts

  • SA regions (see the table below)
  • KM - distance of the locality from the Adelaide GPO in kilometres
  • Terrain difficulty ratings: easy (generally flat terrain), moderate (may include some short undulating gradients) and difficult (may include some continuous or steep gradients).

Stall Events

Stall events at festivals usually occur four times a year in the Adelaide area. It's an opportunity for members and the public to come up and say hello to Birds SA and have a Q & A about birds with experienced birdwatchers. At some festivals, a birdwalk is held with binoculars provided.

Members, their family and friends should only attend a field trip, campout or stall event if they are well and have no cold or flu-like symptoms.
